Should I see a doctor about my varicose veins?

see a doctor

It can be challenging to know when it is necessary to see a medical practitioner about any medical condition. Vein disease is no different.

You should definitely see your doctor as soon as possible if any of the following develop:

  • Superficial thrombophlebitis. This is a clot in a larger vein just below the skin surface. Skin overlying skin can be red. The vein typically is hard to touch, painful and tender. Especially if this is recurrent.
  • Bleeding varicose vein

You should consider see your doctor on a non-urgent basis if any of the following develop:

  • Your leg symptoms are interfering with your daily activities
  • Slow development of an unexpected rash near the ankle, usually inner aspect or front.
  • The skin around the ankle and calf becomes thickened and changes colour
  • Ankle swelling
  • You find the veins visually worrisome.
